March 2019

Angkor Wat and the surrounding temples were the capital of the Khmer Empire. Constructed between the 9th and 15th centuries, this was the largest city in the world during its heyday. What remains now are the magnificent stone hewn ruins of this empire. We'll introduce you to the history and culture of the are then and now and through our energetic and passionate guides these structures come alive.  Our guides know the best times to visit for optimum views and smallest crowds, so that you will experience the temples at their best. We take you to the major and most visited temple complexes, but also to the lesser visited Beng Melea and the even more mysterious Koh Ker complex. And we spend a day at the flooded forest in Lake Tonle Sap, the forest flooded to tree top level; local villagers in cooperation with a community eco-project paddle you through this otherworldly forest. Join us and meet our Cambodian friends as you enjoy a unique and memorable Cambodia experience.

Following breakfast we depart for the Temples of Pre-Rup, Banteay Srei and Ta Phrohm. We will spend the day exploring these temples. Return to Siem Reap and prepare for an evening visit to Phare, The Cambodian Circus. The performers are from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, provided with the opportunity to train as acrobats. They are sure to dazzle you with their skills, and after the performance you will have the opportunity to speak with the performers.

(Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

An hours drive brings us to the 12th century Hindu temple of Beng Melea. Largely covered in forest, we wander through and around the complex as our guide explains the history. Another hours drive takes is to the seldom visited but remarkable temples of Koh Ker. To many it looks like a Mayan pyramid, though the complex is thoroughly Khmer, its unusual appearance gives it a mysterious air. Our guides have all the information to uncover this mystery and answer all your questions.

Today we break from temple viewing and drive 50 minutes to Lake Tonle Sap, the largest lake in southeast Asia. The lake expands and contracts according to the rains. We take a boat to the village where all homes are built on stilts and villagers travel by canoe from place to place. Villagers will paddle us through the flooded forest at tree top level, a surreal and beautiful experience. Late afternoon return to Siem Reap.

We leave these 3 temples for last. Partly as these were the final temples to be built so chronologically this makes sense, but it also they are also the most grandiose of all and the impact greater (we think) after having seen other temples. The sheer immensity of Angkor Wat does not fail to impress, and our arrival is timed for when crowds are smallest, hence the impact is greater. Our guides will explain as you inspect the temples both inside and out, gaining a sense wonders at the ingenuity of this long ago civilization.
